Episode No. 401

Boys Bedroom Ideas Makeover

In episode 401 of the IKEA Home Tour Series, the Squad heads to New Jersey to help step brothers Joaquin and Brandon create a shared bedroom that represents their distinct personalities and goals. The Squad works with the brothers to create storage solutions for their clothing, video games and other belongings, individual workspaces for their college studies and creative projects, all while imprinting their individual styles throughout the space.

Behind the Design

Creative ideas for a shared bedroom

Joaquin and Brandon share an awkward attic bedroom. As they are starting their college lives and working to pursue their dreams the room was no longer functioning. Living at home with their multigenerational family of 8, their room needed to be a place where they could get away. They also wanted to have places to study, play games, and feel each of their personalities came through.

Floor Plan

When looking at the layout of this room, it was important for us to break it down into functional areas: (1) Chill zone (2) Joaquin’s Side (3) Brandon’s Side (4) Getting Ready

A Place To Study

Brandon and Joaquin now have their own dedicated workspaces in the room. By choosing neutral colors, the differences in style still blend together throughout the space. By adding task lighting, like the TERTIAL lamp, each brother can study whenever they need to without disturbing the other.

Divide The Space

The boys enjoy sharing a room and spending time together but, at the end of the day, they want places they can call their own. By using the KALLAX unit we created a partition and gave them much needed storage. The addition of KALLAX inserts provided customization and added functionality.

The Hangout

Joaquin and Brandon enjoy spending time together playing video games. It was important that they had common area to do that in. The KNOPPARP sofa was the perfect size for this small space. By mounting BJARNUMN hooks on the wall, headphones and other items are off the floor easy to reach.

Joaquin and Brandon now have a space that works for them, allowing them to express their own unique personalities while focusing on their future goals. It just goes to show that the simplest of solutions can solve the most awkward of spaces.
